You don’t need to install anything, know anything or buy anything. Starting with AI means putting one real question to a free chatbot — and you can do that today.
Yet most people don’t start. Not because it’s difficult, but because it feels big. As if you first need to know which tool is best, what a “prompt” is, and whether you’re already hopelessly behind. Good news: none of that is necessary.
You’re not behind
It may feel as if everyone is already miles ahead. In reality, most people are only starting now — or haven’t started at all.
How to start (three steps)
1. Open a free AI chatbot and ask a real question. Not a little test question, but something from your own day. “Help me make this email friendlier.” “I’ve got chicken and leeks — what can I cook?” “Explain this word as if I’m twelve.” Real questions let you feel straight away where it’s useful.
2. Talk back. The first answer is rarely perfect — and that’s normal. Just say what you’d like differently: “shorter”, “simpler”, “make it a list”. AI isn’t a search engine where you get one shot; it’s a conversation. Asking follow-up questions is the whole trick.
3. Repeat it for a week, five minutes a day. One question a day is enough. After a week you’ll naturally have discovered where AI helps you most — and the “big scary subject” will simply have become a handy tool.
What you don’t need to do
You don’t need to compare tools, plan a course marathon or wait until you’re “ready for it”. All the big chatbots are alike and have a free version: start with the one you’ve already come across. You can always refine your choice later.
And does AI make mistakes? Yes, sometimes — it’s still a tool, not an oracle. That’s why you start with small, safe questions from your own day. You remain the one who checks and decides.
Today
Ask that one question. That’s all the first step is.
